Sen. Rubio: The Fight Is Against Zika, Not Women's Rights

"Sen. Marco Rubio said Saturday that he doesn’t believe a pregnant woman infected with the Zika virus should have the right to an abortion — even if she had reason to believe the child would be born with severe microcephaly." - Politico, 8/6/16

For too long, Florida policymakers have enacted obstacle after obstacle to prevent women from exercising their reproductive rights. Whether it’s arbitrarily contrived waiting periods, burdensome requirements on abortion clinics, patients and their doctors, or efforts to defund organizations that provide abortion care, enough is enough. These restrictions are medically unnecessary and designed only to restrict access to abortion care and shame women.

Open Letter To Sen. Rubio

We, the undersigned, are Floridians and your constituents and we are deeply troubled by your statement that you don’t believe a woman who would give birth to a child with severe microcephaly should not be able to have an abortion.

There are now more than 3,800 cases of Zika in the United States and, as you know, Florida is on the front lines. What’s more, new research by Harvard University found support for access to abortion, even after 24 weeks, more than doubled if a woman is told her baby has a serious risk of microcephaly.

A woman who has decided to have an abortion – whatever her reasons – deserves our support.

The experience of having an abortion should always be safe, legal, and respectful of a woman’s decision.

No matter what your personal opinion of abortion is, it is not your place to decide for someone else whether she should become a parent.

We stand with Florida women and for reproductive rights for all Floridians.
