In 2023, the state legislature passed HB 1069 (the same bill that led to book bans and censorship of LGBTQ+ content in schools), requiring the Florida Department of Education to approve any materials used for sexual and health education. The following school year, not a single school district received approval for their curriculum.
As a result, Florida students missed out on critical health information during the academic school year, much of which is required by Florida Statute 1003.42. This required information includes prevention of teen dating violence and abuse, fostering healthy relationships, and prevention and control of disease.
Urge DOE Commissioner Diaz and Chancellor Burns to ensure students don’t go another year without comprehensive reproductive health education.
