Florida’s manatees are in grave danger. Powerful special interests are supporting HB 349/SB 198 in the Florida Legislature, a bill that would make it easier for developers to destroy critical seagrass. Florida’s manatees feed primarily on underwater grasses, and allowing big developers to rip up their key food source and attempt to replace it through private “mitigation banks” is reckless and unconscionable.
Most of the 1,101 manatee deaths last year were due to starvation. Lawmakers should be doing everything in their power to protect our endangered manatee population instead of allowing big development interests to destroy their primary food source.
Send the below letter to your legislators urging them to oppose any efforts to pass this bill that would further harm our manatees.
