Take Action: Protect Direct Democracy and Citizen-led Amendments

Gov. DeSantis and his allies in the Florida Legislature are pursuing a massive power grab that undermines people-powered policy-making and our democracy.

Thanks to citizen-led amendments to the state Constitution, Florida voters have raised the minimum wage, enacted term limits for politicians, protected environmental treasures, legalized medical marijuana, established a taxpayer bill of rights, created universal voluntary pre-kindergarten for children, and passed many other reforms when politicians in Tallahassee have refused to act.

But Gov. DeSantis and out-of-touch politicians in Tallahassee want to make it nearly impossible for citizens to get future initiatives on the ballot. Among a long list of new bureaucratic hurdles to qualifying citizen-led amendments, the Governor’s proposal would set unrealistic deadlines to submit signatures, ban important quality control measures, threaten volunteers collecting petition signatures with felony charges and massive fines, and allow appointees of the Governor to insert partisan language on voters’ ballots to confuse voters and undermine a proposed citizen-led amendment.

DeSantis’ and his legislative allies' attack on citizen-led amendments is a cynical ploy to rig the system in favor of powerful special interests, taking away power from We The People so that the only amendments we get to vote on are the ones politicians and their corporate elite donors decide to put on the ballot. Urge your state representative and senator to oppose this legislation.  You can customize the letter below (optional).
