Call For An Investigation Into The King Ranch Scandal

Gov. Scott and his legislative allies have allowed sugar industry polluters to foul the Everglades and stick taxpayers with the tab to clean up their mess. Is it a mere coincidence they've done this while accepting expensive hunting trips to the exclusive King Ranch in Texas on Big Sugar’s dime?

It’s time for Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to quit her partisan antics and get to the bottom of the King Ranch political scandal that has engulfed Gov. Rick Scott and the Republican Party.

Petition To Attorney General Pam Bondi

We, the undersigned, urge you to investigate the King Ranch ‘fundraising’ scandal that has enveloped Gov. Rick Scott and many top Florida lawmakers.

The shroud of secrecy Gov. Scott, the Republican Party of Florida and the sugar industry have placed around these so-called ‘fundraising trips’ only begs more questions. Given the appearance of impropriety and potential for pay to play politics, the public deserves to know the truth behind these ‘fundraising trips’ and a serious investigation is needed.

We urge you to thoroughly investigate the King Ranch scandal to determine if any laws were broken.

    Friends,

As you’ve probably heard by now, the Tampa Bay Times has uncovered that many of Florida’s leading Republicans, including Gov. Rick Scott, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam, and House Speaker Will Weatherford have had a really sweet deal from the powerful sugar industry: free secret hunting junkets to King Ranch, Texas.

The Miami Herald recently editorialized, “The scandal cries out for an investigation by the state’s attorney general, Pam Bondi, but she has shown no inclination to deal with issues that might harm her own party. Instead, she has put her priority on trying to uphold the state’s archaic gay-marriage ban. That plays well on the tea-party circuit but does nothing to improve the sad state of Florida politics.”

Maybe these secret hunting trips were technically legal because of a loophole in Florida’s ethics laws, but the fact is we don’t know if any laws were broken because of the shroud of secrecy Gov. Scott, the Republican Party of Florida and the sugar industry have placed around these so-called ‘fundraising trips’. Given the complete lack of transparency, and the appearance of a pay to play political scheme, a thorough investigation is needed.

As the Herald put it, “If Ms. Bondi wants to show that her office is above partisanship and will pursue wrongdoing no matter where it leads, this would be a good place to start.”
