Subject: Did Florida’s top Republicans break the law?
Friends,
As you’ve probably heard by now, the Tampa Bay Times has uncovered that many of Florida’s leading Republicans, including Gov. Rick Scott, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam, and House Speaker Will Weatherford have had a really sweet deal from the powerful sugar industry: free secret hunting junkets to King Ranch, Texas.

The Miami Herald recently editorialized, “The scandal cries out for an investigation by the state’s attorney general, Pam Bondi, but she has shown no inclination to deal with issues that might harm her own party. Instead, she has put her priority on trying to uphold the state’s archaic gay-marriage ban. That plays well on the tea-party circuit but does nothing to improve the sad state of Florida politics.”
Maybe these secret hunting trips were technically legal because of a loophole in Florida’s ethics laws, but the fact is we don’t know if any laws were broken because of the shroud of secrecy Gov. Scott, the Republican Party of Florida and the sugar industry have placed around these so-called ‘fundraising trips’. Given the complete lack of transparency, and the appearance of a pay to play political scheme, a thorough investigation is needed.

As the Herald put it, “If Ms. Bondi wants to show that her office is above partisanship and will pursue wrongdoing no matter where it leads, this would be a good place to start.”
