Subject: Stop fracking in Florida
Two bills would make it easier for the dangerous oil and gas extraction process known as fracking to take place in our state. Worse yet, if passed these bills would prevent the public from knowing what chemicals are being pumped into our land and water, jeopardizing the environment and health of our communities.
Join me and tell the Florida Legislature to oppose these two bills:
While there are no planned fracking projects in Florida as of yet, these two bills (HB 71 and HB 157) will deny the public's right to know the details of the chemical mix that is pumped into the ground during the fracking process.
More information on the two fracking bills proposed by Rep. Ray Rodrigues (R-Estero):
* HB 71 directs the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to create an online database of fracking chemicals but prohibits DEP from asking about chemical concentrations.
* HB 157 would exempt “trade secrets” relating to fracking from being disclosed as part of Florida’s public records requirements. Florida’s Constitution requires a two-thirds vote for final passage for public records exemptions like this.
Take action and stop these two bills today:
There is no reason to keep the public in the dark about the types and quantities of chemicals being pumped into their ground that may affect their communities. There must be full and complete disclosure about fracking, period.
