Jeb Bush: get ready for another round of politics "as ugly as it gets" … by gimleteye

The Miami Herald didn't report who among the Cuban American elite attended Jeb Bush's presidential campaign run-up. Miami -- and in particular its Cuban American developers -- were core supporters for Jeb's political career beginning in 1994 but not gaining traction until his 1998 win as governor. His speech yesterday was more than an unofficial launch of a presidential campaign: it was a thank-you to those who brought his political career to life before the storm of national political campaign. That the upcoming campaign will require their contributions went unstated. It didn't need to be mentioned. This was his crowd.

Although voters appear wholly unconcerned by history, it still bears repeating and especially because Jeb Bush will be a Republican presidential candidate. Although American voters are mired in an economic malaise sprung from the loins of the housing bust and financial crisis, one hopes that history will have its day with a Jeb Bush candidacy: how the housing boom and economic engine of the financial bubble took off in Florida wetlands and farmland, how the groundwork was laid for an anti-regulatory spasm endorsed by Bush once he gained office in 1998 in favor of the Great Destroyers, how speculators gained the levers of power and then 9/11 laid the groundwork for further petitioning to the Federal Reserve to collapse interest rates: the Bush boom then bust coursed through Florida's political veins and none, I mean none, have been held accountable.

In the interest of history, perhaps at least reporters and mainstream press will sift through Eye On Miami blog for facts of the case. Use our search engine. Just type "Jeb Bush", or, click the category bearing his name.

So far as "the Jeb Bush Doctrine" is concerned -- the subject of this morning's Herald report -- America's Cuba policy has two faces here. The visible one is the antagonism of freedom fighters against repressive military caretakers of the Castro legacy. The invisible one is the competition between Miami Cubans, mainly Republican, and the Cuban military for control of the island's future. Internal, domestic politics in Florida -- and in Congress -- spin on complaints about human rights but are rooted in dreams of gold in Cuba. No one knows this better than Jeb! The exclamation is a remnant from bumper stickers of his last campaign as governor.

When push comes to shove -- through the Fox News juggernaut -- , Americans may embrace another Bush presidency. It will be necessary for the Bush opposition to sift through the record and in the case of the Bush record, it is not going to be hard to find fault with the previous iterations of the Bush doctrine. Our treasury has been depleted by multi-trillion dollar wars fought to maintain oil despots in the mideast. And how are we going to generate "respect" and "leadership" with GOP leaders claiming, as they have, that "global warming is a hoax perpetrated by Barbra Streisand" while images of municipal police decked out in military gear make American streets look just like Tahrir Square in Cairo except more efficient?

Jeb Bush brought his own brand of paternalistic, "compassionate" conservatism to Florida. For eight years, it was "my way or the highway" for the Florida public. No doubt, in his forthcoming presidential campaign, Bush will count on erasing that history and will have the Fox News propaganda machine to help. Judging by the results of the last election cycle, he just might succeed.

Sometimes the hate shown towards a half black president by pro Republican Cubans is beyond disgusting. Get a grip most of the Cuban population are of African descent.

I find your continued posts against Jeb Bush very interesting since several Democrat journalists of note, among others, are saying Jeb Bush is not only the best candidate for President overall, but definitely the best Republican candidate among the lot.

We have been through 6-8 years of hell and futilely watch as our country is dragged through a period of woefully lacking the leadership experience, knowledge and strength of character in the White House.

Most of us are saddened at what we see passing for presidential leadership. I strongly suggest the people have no desire to continue along this negative path in the future.

Maybe Jeb Bush will be the candidate to win or not. In any case, don’t you think the country deserves a president with experience, especially executive experience and one who is a known policy giant to take us through the rebuilding of America’s credibility as the leader of the free world?

1st anon what is your fixation with where anyone descended from. We all descended from a tree at some point (unless of course you are Pat Robertson).

This r will not vote for either a Clinton or a Bush over the past 28 years the white house has been inhabited by a member of either of those clans for 20.

Jefferson, Franklin, Washington, Paine etal.... risked everything to get out from under monarchical rule and 200 plus years later we are laying the foundations for a system of competing monarchical families....... go figure.

Vive le Roi!!!!! What about it gimspierre ?

Ref. two annons back.
Cuban Americans must be doing something right when they are the constant targets of racial and ethical epithets on this liberal blog. Seems as though the moderator of this blog enjoys egging on the slew of cowards that hide behind an anonymous post to insult at will. For those misguided souls who make Cuban American bashing a sport know this, your insults are no different than those received by Irish, Italian or Jewish immigrants to our great country since its founding. We have learned to live with them, progressed and along with those bad things done by a small percentage of our community the majority has progressed and like it or not today a large number of us are successful as any other ethnic group found in this country. and we do not take a back seat to any of you. We know you would not dare say anything as derogatory about a Jew or a black in this blog because of course to you that would not be politically correct. So go on and continue your cowardly rants in this blog and if encouraged by anger feel free to walk up to any Cuban American and utter these insults in person. You may find yourself sucking soup through a straw and a wired jaw for a couple of months.

Look at the Name.... did they ever teach you the concept of sarcasm (I agree lots of Cuban bashing Aqui)....BTW I'm an American by birth and Cuban-American by the grace of god.
I strongly would discourage you from trying to make it so I have to suck soup through a straw.

A wired jaw is not a threat but a guarantee. Go cry about the improprieties of the Cuban Adjustment Act to congress. This blog is helpless to appease your wishes. Not a single Cuban would have migrated here had the U.S. Government not supported the overthrow of democratically elected President Carlos Prio Socarras by putting in place a tyrant named Fulgencio Batista and then allowing an anti-American communist dirtbag like Fidel Castro to come in and point nukes at the U.S. Also blame a naive president John F. Kennedy for abandoning hundreds of 19-20 year old Cuban men on the shores of Bay of Pigs out of fear of being branded an imperialist. Maybe a little reading would brush up your sense of history. It's easy now Wikipedia is free.

Cuban hater before insulting whole groups of people with bigoted comments learn to express yourself in a civilized manner by stating points and debating facts. Sad that an immigrant has to teach you about those qualities.

Pitiful how the dialogue has deteriorated. I am finding that it is harder and harder to have insightful discussions on matters that impact us all with so many preconceived negative opinions that are viewed as truth. This is one reason why there is so much chaos here. It is nurtured by the powers that be to maintain power and keep things the way they are. I am happy that Obama consults with many people before he makes major decisions. And because of this he will make the best decisions for the country on immigration.
